Subframe 2

2-16-09: After making quite a bit of progress on assembly, I ran into an issue getting the engine level which was causing the tranny to hit the tunnel and the exhuast to hit the bottom of the car.  After taking measurements, I determined that the stock subframe was bent,  It must have been hit in the right front as it was 1" lower.

I decided that at this point I would go with an aftermarket subframe to get the added benefit of a better design as well as giving me rack and pinion.  Because I had already invested in aftermarket suspension components, I wanted a sub that would accept my Global West setup.  This lead me to Speedtech: www.speedtech-performance.com  The sub comes setup for a chevy engine, but because a Pontiac block mounts much differently, I needed to fabricate new mounts.  I  tweaked the existing motor mounts and moved them forward on the block to the from 2 mounting holes.  I then created new frame mounts and test-fit the engine in the frame and the frame in the car.   Everything fits very well.  Next is to disassemble the sub and have it powdercoated.

3-14-09:  The subframe is stripped (again) and the engine mounts have been final welded.  Speedtech also sent me some additional gussets for the top shock mount / upper control arm mount area.  I believe they were getting some deflection in this area when road racing, so I added them as well.  The subframe will now head off to the powdercoater.

3-22-09:  The subframe is back from the powdercoater (matte black) and I have started reassembly of the front end.

6-7-09: The engine and tranny are back in the subframe and the subframe is back under the car (hopefully for the final time).  The car is rolling again!
