6.  Body Prep 2

9/1/06: The car is on the rotisserie.  Before going to the media blasters, the shop will:

  • Remove the front subframe
  • Cut out the floors to expose the inner rockers which are showing some rot
  • Grind off the seam sealer that was added along the firewall cowl

9/6/06: The car has been to the media blaster and back to the shop in one day.  The shop will spray it with protective primer in the morning and start cutting out the cancer.  I will be placing an order for the following body parts:

  • Full floor
  • Full trunk
  • Roof skin
  • Floor seat mount frames
  • Both Inner rockers
  • Both toe panels
  • Full cowl (mid firewall to windshield)
  • Both rear frame rails

...None of these parts were initially expected to be replaced.  Never buy a car in primer!  However, the car will be done right.

10/6/2006:  After the bodyshop sprayed a thin layer of primer on the bare metal body, it became apparent that the quarter panel patches that were done by the prior owner were too warped and would require a lot of body filler.  So we are adding rear quarters and inners to the list of body parts.

I actually found a local gentleman that specializes in rebuilding 1st Gen shells from the frame rails up.  His work is quite amazing.  He had fabricated all of the jis necessary to totally create a new 1st gen shell.  My shell will be heading to him on 10/22 to have all the new metal installed to factory specs and it only takes him a few weeks  I will have a completely new shell by mid November!  Here is a link to Tony's site: http://www.musclecarmetal.com.  His work is truly awesome!

10/22/2006: Dropped off the shell at Tony's (Musclecar Metal).  He will start it in 1-week and it will take 2 weeks to finish!  I also received my QA1 Coil over shocks and Global West upper and lower control arms.  I will start the subframe resto this week.
